“Played on the ZX81… had a geedy muck on… watched Robin of Sherwood…”
On 1st January 1984, the 11-year-old Bob Fischer carefully filled out a page of his brand new WHSmiths diary. On the 2nd January 1984, he did it again. And again on 3rd January 1984. In fact, against all odds, he kept writing his diary every day that year, right through until 31st December.
Four decades on, Bob opens the pages of his 1984 diary to relive the dubious glorious of his Teesside childhood. He made robots, built dens, rode his trusty Raleigh Chopper through portals to alternate dimensions* and watched a hell of a lot of telly. He collected Fighting Fantasy books, played Jet Set Willy and wrote his own (awful) Doctor Who stories. He spent a week terrified of the “Grey Lady” ghost that haunted the dormitories of Carlton Outdoor Education Centre on the North York Moors.
(*Not really, but it felt like it at the time)
Bob Fischer is a writer and a radio presenter from Teesside. He spent two decades ambling around the schedules of BBC Radio Tees, and has also worked for BBC 6 Music and Radio 4 Extra. His book Wiffle Lever To Full! was an acclaimed travelogue of cult TV conventions published by Hodder & Stoughton, and he writes regularly for magazines that include Fortean Times, Electronic Sound and the official Doctor Who Magazine. He indulges his love of creepy old films and telly as the founder of The Haunted Generation website and the host of the touring Scarred For Life theatre show.
